The Challenge: AI Traffic Attribution

Setting Up AI Tracking in GA4

Step 1: Check Your Current AI Traffic

In GA4, go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. Look for: chatgpt.com/referral, perplexity.ai/referral, claude.ai/referral, bing.com/referral (includes Copilot).

Step 2: Create an AI Traffic Segment

Create a segment to easily track all AI traffic together. Use conditions like: Session source contains "chatgpt" OR "openai" OR "perplexity" OR "claude".

Step 3: Build an AI Traffic Report

Add dimensions (Session source, Landing page) and metrics (Sessions, Engaged sessions, Conversions). Apply your AI Referrals segment.

UTM Parameters for AI Attribution

When you can control links (like in your llms.txt), use UTM parameters: ?utm_source=chatgpt.com&utm_medium=ai-referral&utm_campaign=ai-marketing

Measuring Indirect AI Influence
